a stylized Wahaika,or short club (maori hand weapon)carved from totara, a native New Zealand timber, with Paua shell inlays, made as a 21st key
Stunning work, beautifully carved and beautifully finished. The handle is very neatly done too. I've never heard of a Wahaika before, but it looks very similar in shape to a hurley stick which is now used for the sport, but which the Celts used as clubs, except that the hurley handle is longer.
thanks, yeah it is similar to a hurley stick, the maori had a variety of short club for hand to hand combat, usually made from Pounamu (jade) or whale bone, this type has a niche to catch an attacking opponents weapon.Totara is a new zealand native timber used primary for carving amongst maori,I've used it here as its purely ornamental (21 key)
very nice work
